THE CHALLENGE

Located in the center of Edmonton’s ICE District, Stantec Tower is 69 stories of office space and premium residential units. The construction of this luxurious structure, this multi-year project came with its share of environmental challenges:

Edmonton’s seasonal sub-zero temperatures meant that site temperature needed to be controlled with heaters to ensure optimal conditions for millwork and other material installations, and to mitigate the risk of burst pipes from cold weather.

PCL needed a solution that would enable their team to monitor conditions in real-time, enabling their field operations teams to take immediate corrective action.

THE SOLUTION

The Stantec team used Job Site Insights® to get the real-time data and analytics that help PCL build smarter, leaner and greener. JSI is a smart IoT construction platform that brings digital sensor and analytics capabilities to construction’s workface. IoT sensors installed throughout a project monitor vital construction conditions and alert job site personnel to adverse conditions that can lead to costly damages and rework. JSI virtualizes and models a job site, mapping sensors, equipment, assets and people to a single view accessible from any PC or mobile device.

JSI helps construction builders and general contractors get actionable, real-time insights and predictions into the construction project allowing them to adapt to changing conditions, increase worker safety, enhance project efficiency, reduce energy consumption and avoid rework and costly insurance claims.

THE RESULT

Job Site Insights® (JSI) alerted construction teams to temperature and humidity deviations that could impair hardwood finishing, material quality, and lead to costly rework and extended project completion. Continuous temperature monitoring reduced the project’s energy consumption, saved heating costs, minimized the construction’s carbon footprint, and prevented $104,000 in potential water damage.

All told, a $40,000 investment in sensors helped our client save:

• $180K Carbon-based fuel savings
• $104K Rework avoidance water/leak damage
• $68K Reduced hardwood damage rework costs
• $69K Electrical energy savings
• 1,100 Hours in advanced project schedule.
