THE CHALLENGE
The Milner project, located in a remote location with no cellular access, faced various challenges during its two operational phases. The core obstacle was maintaining safety measures, which required multiple trades to operate above and near an operational stack releasing exhaust gas at 500 degrees Celsius (932 degrees Fahrenheit). Due to the intense heat, ambient temperatures rise significantly in the surrounding areas, which can be a major safety hazard if overlooked. The project aimed to find a solution that enabled the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager to read temperatures in crucial work zones that are exposed to the intense heat of the gas in order to determine the safety of the area and of job site personnel.
THE SOLUTION
To address these concerns, Latium Technologies provided its temperature sensors designed to detect the ambient temperature around the operational stack and working areas. Combined with Job Site Insights , Latium’s custom-engineered platform, enabled the HSE manager to wirelessly and remotely monitor the ambient temperatures consistently without having to send a worker to manually check. This ensured that personnel were promptly notified when ambient temperatures were rising above safe working thresholds, reducing wasted labour and improving the overall operational efficiency of the project.
THE RESULT
1. Captured Opportunity:
Sensors monitored temperatures to prove the work environment was safe, avoiding a site-wide shutdown that would have cost the client approximately $1.75M in lost opportunity. The project also saved labour costs of manually sending a worker to measure the temperature of working zones.
2. Mitigated Risk:
The collected data serves as a valuable asset, helping to preserve and maintain job site assets and protect job site personnel. Furthermore, it ensures the proof of safety measures that have been put in place to mitigate costly insurance claims.
3. Enhanced Safety:
The sensors contributed to enhanced safety by ensuring the safety of working zones. Detecting temperature mitigates the risks of injuries and saves workers from heat exhaustion.
4. Operational Efficiency:
The sensors streamlined operations processes that enabled the HSE manager to allocate labour and resources more efficiently and effectively across the project site.
